“Burnout” is a common phenomenon at the workplace, yet people rarely come to realization about its occurrence in their worklife, and its implications to their survival in the changing work world and to their overall well-being.
Burnout is more prevalent in the helping professions, people-oriented jobs (e.g., doctors, nurses, social workers, therapists, carers, teachers, customer services), and occupations dealing with life-death crises and high competition (e.g., police, fire-fighters, stock brokers). In addition, people who do tedious and routine work without variety are equally susceptible to burnout.
Burnout can be seen and dealt with positively–it allows people to re-prioritize things that are important to them, to re-discover personal strengths for coping with burnout, and to have their personal and career life redefined.
